PAST IN PRESENT:
Curator: Jan Van Woensel
Presented as part of WATOU 2010 - Between Language and Image.
July 3, 2010 to September 5, 2010.

The group exhibition “Past in Present” shows the work of a selection of emerging artists that are currently, or were recently in residency at HISK (Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Ghent, Belgium), Rijks Academy (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Slade Art School (London, UK) and Le Fresnoy (Lille, France), along side the works of internationally working artists. “Past in Present” explores how elements of the (personal and collective) past can be recalled, romanticized, and commemorated, or, denied, left aside, and ignored in the present. The concept of memory is a long-standing theme in art. “Past in Present” aims to create tension between the reminiscent, emotionally present past and the concrete reality of the present.

Participants: Céline Butaye, Masashi Echigo, Zoro Feigl, Boris Groys, Susan Kordalewski, Jitka Mikulicova, Miks Mitrevics, Noor Nuyten, Nicolas Provost, Lee Ranaldo, Max Razdow, Rebecca Stephany, Tithonus, Philippe Vandenberg, Lauren von Gogh, Sarah Westphal
